How to choose a lat pulldown machine for a home gym

Both machines here are stand-alone and plate-loaded, so they need no rack and use plates you may already own. The choice comes down to budget, load and how often you switch between pulldowns and rows.

Powerline PLM180X: the value pick

The Powerline PLM180X gives you a high pulley for lat pulldowns and a low pulley for seated rows and curls, with a lat bar and low row bar included. It takes up to 113 kg of standard 1″ plates (Olympic plates with adapter sleeves) on a 122 × 109 cm footprint, and carries a 10-year frame warranty.

Body-Solid GLM85B: no cable changes, heavier loads

The Body-Solid GLM85B Pro Lat Machine steps up to a design where the high and low stations share one continuous cable, so you move from pulldowns to rows without unclipping anything. It loads up to 141 kg on a 1″ horn, can be upgraded later with a 95 kg weight stack, and has a lifetime frame warranty.

Already own a power rack or Smith machine?

A rack-mounted lat attachment costs less and uses no extra floor space, but each one fits one rack only. Find the one made for your rack in Rack Attachments. For a weight-stack lat pulldown built for busy commercial gyms, see the Body-Solid Series 2 range.

Lat pulldown machine FAQs

What is a lat pulldown machine good for?

It trains your lats, the big muscles that give your back its width, plus your upper back, rear shoulders and biceps. It is also the easiest way to build up to your first pull-up, because you can start with less than your bodyweight.

Should I buy a lat pulldown machine or a lat attachment?

If you already own one of our power racks or Smith machines, the attachment costs less and uses no extra floor space. If you don't, choose a stand-alone machine: an attachment only fits the rack it was made for.

Do these machines come with weights?

No. Both are plate-loaded, so plates are sold separately. See our weight plates.

What else can I train on a lat pulldown machine?

Both machines have a low pulley or row station, so you can do seated rows as well as pulldowns, plus biceps curls and triceps press-downs.

Do I have space for one?

Allow the footprint plus about 60 cm behind the seat to get on and off: roughly 180 × 110 cm for the PLM180X and 200 × 115 cm for the GLM85B. Both stand about 210 cm tall, so a standard 2.4 m ceiling is enough.

Is delivery included?

Yes. Every machine ships free Australia-wide by freight from our Adelaide warehouse.
