How to choose free weights

Everything here is Body-Solid, and it all fits together: our plates, barbells and curl bars all use the Olympic (2″) size.

Dumbbells

Buy rubber hex dumbbells one at a time to build up the weights you use most. The 235 kg dumbbell set gives you 10 pairs from 2 to 22.5 kg in one order, the simplest way to fit out a gym. Short on space? The adjustable dumbbell dials from 5 to 30 kg in one unit.

Weight plates

Our rubber-grip Olympic plates come in 1.25 to 25 kg and are sold one at a time. The 112.5 kg plate set gives you 14 plates in one order: two each of 20, 15, 10, 5 and 1.25 kg, plus four 2.5 kg plates.

Barbells

The Body-Solid 7 ft Olympic barbell weighs 20 kg, holds up to 272 kg and comes in chrome (OB86) or black (OB86B); only the finish differs. For arm work, the 7.7 kg Olympic EZ curl bar comes in chrome or black. Add a pair of spring collars to hold the plates on.

Storage

Keep it all off the floor with a plate tree, dumbbell rack or the Rugged Y420, which stores both. Compare them on our weight racks page.

Free weights FAQs

Olympic or Standard plates?

Olympic plates have a 2″ (50 mm) hole and fit Olympic barbells, the size used in most gyms. Standard plates have a 1″ (25 mm) hole. Our plates and bars are all Olympic.

Should I buy a set or single weights?

A set is the quickest way to get a full range in one order. Single dumbbells and plates let you fill gaps or go heavier later.

Are all Olympic barbells 20 kg?

No. A standard men’s 7 ft (2.2 m) Olympic bar weighs 20 kg and a women’s bar 15 kg, while technique and EZ curl bars are lighter. Our 7 ft Olympic barbell weighs 20 kg and our Olympic EZ curl bar 7.7 kg, so add the bar to the plates when you count your lift.
