How to choose leg machines

Most leg set-ups start with one pressing machine for quads and glutes, then add a leg extension and curl for the knees and hamstrings, and finally smaller machines for calves, glutes and thighs. Three things narrow it down: which movements you want, how heavy you train, and how much room you have.

Which leg press?

See every model on our leg press and hack squat machines page. A vertical leg press is the smallest and cheapest way to press heavy: the Powerline PVLP156X vertical leg press needs about 115 × 120 cm of floor and takes up to 182 kg. The Body-Solid GCLP100 compact leg press adds a calf raise and a 450 kg capacity in a frame 170 cm long. The Body-Solid GLPH1100B leg press and hack squat gives you two machines in one, also rated to 450 kg. For a busy commercial floor, the Body-Solid SGLP500 45° commercial leg press takes 680 kg on an extra-wide footplate.

Which leg extension and curl?

See every model on our leg extension and curl machines page. All four of our leg extension and curl machines train quads and hamstrings from one station. The Powerline PLCE165X is the value pick for home. The Body-Solid GLCE365B is the heavy-commercial build of the same seated-extension, lying-curl design. The Body-Solid GCEC340B cam series does both movements seated, with a cam for even resistance. The Body-Solid Pro ClubLine S2LEC uses a weight stack instead of plates, so you change the weight with a pin. If you already own a cable machine, the Body-Solid GLEG bench with cable leg developer adds leg extensions and curls using its weight stack.

Calves, glutes and thighs

The Powerline PSC43X seated calf raise has a 3:1 lever, so every kilogram you load works like about three at the calves. The Powerline PGM200X Glute Master works one leg at a time to isolate the glutes and hamstrings. For commercial gyms, the Body-Solid Pro ClubLine S2IOT inner and outer thigh machine trains hip adduction and abduction on one weight stack. It matches the other Series 2 machines, so a hotel, apartment or clinic gym can build a matching set.

Leg machine FAQs

Which exercise machine is best for legs?

For most people, a leg press. It trains the quads, glutes and hamstrings together and lets you load heavy safely on your own. Add a leg extension and curl machine to work the quads and hamstrings separately, then a calf raise or glute machine if you want to isolate those.

What is the difference between a lying and a seated leg curl?

On a lying leg curl you lie face down and curl the pad towards your glutes. On a seated leg curl you sit with your thighs held down and bend your knees under you. The seated version keeps your hips bent, which stretches the hamstrings more at the start of each rep, and it is easier to get on and off. The PLCE165X, GLCE365B and GLEG curl lying; the GCEC340B and S2LEC curl seated.

Plate-loaded or weight stack?

Plate-loaded machines cost less and let you keep adding plates, but you load and unload them between exercises. A weight stack, as on the Pro ClubLine machines, changes weight with a pin, which is quicker for circuits, gyms and clients who share a machine.

Can I use Olympic plates?

The three Body-Solid leg presses take Olympic (2″) plates. The Powerline vertical leg press, the plate-loaded leg extension and curl machines, the calf raise and the Glute Master have 1″ Standard posts; fit Olympic plates with an adapter sleeve.

Is delivery included?

Yes. Every leg machine ships free Australia-wide by freight from our Adelaide warehouse. Freight is usually delivered unattended, so please make sure there is a safe, accessible spot to leave it.
